Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has opened up on why Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho has found it difficult to secure consistent playing time this season.
The Celtic F.C. forward has had limited appearances since the beginning of the year, leaving many fans questioning his role in the squad.
Iheanacho, 29, joined the Scottish giants during the summer transfer window after parting ways with Sevilla FC, where he terminated his three-year contract after just one season.
The Nigerian international initially showed promise in his early games for Celtic, registering three goal contributions in his first four matches. However, his progress was soon disrupted after he picked up a hamstring injury that affected his fitness and momentum.
Speaking about the situation, O’Neill explained that the striker hasn’t had enough opportunities to prove himself fully.
According to him, Iheanacho possesses strong qualities, especially his ability to hold up the ball and support attacking play, but concerns about his full fitness have made things difficult.
O’Neill admitted he sympathises with the striker but stressed that decisions at the club must be based on what is best for the team at the moment.
He added that other players in the squad may currently be better suited to the demands and physical intensity of the league, which has also limited Iheanacho’s chances on the pitch.
Despite the setbacks, many fans still believe the Super Eagles star has the quality to bounce back once he regains full fitness and gets more opportunities to showcase his talent. ⚽🔥
