The 40-year-old, together with her husband, has accused the hospital of removing her uterus without seeking consent from either of them.

Nalubega recounted how she ended up at Koala Health Centre IV when she was about to give birth to her baby, who allegedly died in her womb.

“On Tuesday, February 24, I started experiencing complications that I thought were labour pains. I felt intense pain and was bleeding. I told my husband, and we decided to go to the hospital. My condition deteriorated, and doctors at Koala deemed it too critical and referred me to Kawempe National Referral Hospital.

I developed severe and excessive vomiting and was put on a drip. They could not manage my condition and referred me to Kawempe National Referral Hospital. An ambulance was brought, and I was transported. My husband came shortly after I was admitted,” she said.

Nalubega was put in a wheelchair and taken to Level Four. Doctors attempted to have her deliver the baby naturally, but she was unable to.

They then recommended a Caesarean section (C-section), a decision she agreed to together with her husband, who was present.

Nalubega’s concern after seeing intern doctors

According to Nalubega, the initial plan by doctors was to assist her in delivering the baby via a Caesarean section.

While in the delivery room, she grew concerned and felt the need to voice her worries.

“I only saw intern doctors around me. I became concerned and asked why they were not under a senior doctor’s supervision. They told me the senior doctor was on the way but had given them the go-ahead to start the procedure.

They initially intended to use partial anaesthesia to prevent me from feeling pain during the procedure, but suddenly they chose to render me completely unconscious,” she said.

Nalubega’s husband stated that while he anxiously waited for news from the delivery room, he saw his wife being moved to a different ward.

When he followed, he received the devastating news: the baby had died and his wife’s uterus had been removed.

He alleged that no one had consulted him about the procedure. While he initially suspected that his wife might have given consent while in theatre, Nalubega denied doing so.

“When she regained consciousness, she asked me where the baby was. I told her the baby had died. I then told her that, according to the nurses, her uterus had been removed. She asked whether I had given consent, which I had not, as I was never asked,” Nalubega’s husband said.

Nalubega examined before discharge

The couple said they chose not to raise their concerns with the hospital administration immediately, as Nalubega was still receiving treatment at the facility.

Nalubega added that before her discharge, senior doctors who examined her suggested that something might have gone wrong.

One doctor even suggested she might need to return to the operating room, but it was not considered a viable option at the time.

Nalubega has accused the intern doctors of removing her uterus and is now planning to take legal action against the hospital for alleged negligence.
