A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Iyabo Obasanjo, has called on party members and voters in Ogun State to rally behind her governorship ambition, pledging inclusive development anchored on women empowerment, infrastructure renewal and quality education.
The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo made the call on Monday while addressing journalists at the APC national headquarters in Abuja after formally declaring her interest in the 2027 governorship race.
She urged party stakeholders to support her bid to secure the APC ticket, expressing confidence that her candidacy would position the party for victory in the state.
“I am sure not only will we succeed in getting the nomination, but we’ll also succeed in governing Ogun State in a way that will make APC even greater in that state and in the nation,” she said.
Highlighting her development priorities, Obasanjo stressed the need to address infrastructure challenges, particularly road congestion affecting commuters travelling from Lagos through Ogun to other parts of the country.
“Regarding specific plans, I have applauded the Lagos-Calabar Road. Ogun State faces road congestion for travellers leaving Lagos to go east or north. Discongesting these roads will improve citizens’ lives,” she said.
She also called for greater investment in education and agriculture, urging stakeholders to back policies that would expand opportunities for young people.
“Other priorities include transportation, agriculture and education. I want children to have opportunities to shape their futures, particularly through science, technology and ICT education. Ogun State is a major provider of raw food to Lagos, and we aim to strengthen agriculture and continue our role as a manufacturing hub,” she added.
Addressing concerns about zoning, Iyabo Obasanjo appealed for unity across the state’s senatorial districts, noting that one zone has yet to produce a governor since the Second Republic.
“I believe every zone should have the opportunity to produce a governor. A candidate must win across all zones, not just one. I have the capacity to do that, which is why I am putting myself forward,” she said.
She further called on women and youths to seize the moment, noting that Ogun has never had a female governor.
“A woman has never been governor, and inspiring women voters is crucial,” she stated.
Iyabo Obasanjo expressed confidence that her political experience — having served as a senator and Commissioner for Health — would help galvanise grassroots support for her candidacy.
“We’re mobilising. If you know my efforts when I was Commissioner for Health, we did a lot of good things, and the goodwill from my time in the Senate and as Commissioner is what is making it so easy to mobilise for APC and to mobilise for my candidature for the gubernatorial ticket,” she said.
She urged party members and residents of Ogun State to unite behind what she described as a shared vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development ahead of the 2027 polls.
