For 17 years, Peris, known to many as Mama Sharon, has been incarcerated at the Eldoret Women’s Prison, serving time for a decision she now deeply regrets.

Why was Peris jailed?
Raised in a deeply religious family, Peris once embodied the values of discipline and faith. But her life took a different turn when she relocated to Nairobi in search of new opportunities.

It was there, she says, that she fell into the wrong company, relationships that would ultimately alter the course of her life.
According to Love Beyond Bars Foundation, a close friend named Eleanor, alongside two of her brothers, approached her for financial assistance.
Trusting them, Peris lent them money and even allowed them to use her car. What she did not fully grasp at the time, she says, was the gravity of the situation she was becoming part of.
Authorities later determined that Peris had knowledge of a plot to end someone’s life but failed to report it. That omission would prove costly. In 2009, she was convicted of conspiracy and handed a life sentence.

Will Peris be released?
Years later, her sentence was reduced to 30 years following an appeal. If all goes to plan, Peris will walk free in 2030, after more than two decades behind bars.

Now reflecting on her journey, she speaks candidly about the choices that led her to prison. Her message is clear and resolute: the company one keeps can shape, or shatter, a lifetime.
“It is important to always pray to God to help you choose the right friends,” she says. “The wrong ones can destroy your future.”
Within the prison walls, Peris has spent years coming to terms with her past while trying to rebuild a sense of purpose.

Having served 13 years of the 14-year jail term that had originally been imposed on him for the offence of robbery, he was handed a death sentence after a spirited fight to overturn the initial verdict failed.
