Viona Munai tragically died at a hospital in Kayole following an alleged non-consensual tooth extraction procedure, leaving her family with many unanswered questions.

Their pain was compounded by the fact that Munai, who was nine months pregnant, also lost her unborn child. The family is now appealing for justice.

Viona taken to hospital after toothache

“I took my wife to the hospital on Tuesday, February 24, after she complained of a toothache. I went back home expecting it to be routine care. But the next morning, when I returned at 11 am, I discovered that doctors had already extracted one of her teeth without my consent or signing any documents. After they removed the tooth, her neck started swelling,” Eliud Okenye recalled.

Okenye said he was later informed that 28-year-old Viona had been taken to the theatre. For hours, he waited anxiously as he watched other patients go in and come out.

He claimed that he was not given clear information about her condition and initially believed she was being operated on, possibly to deliver the baby, given that she was nine months pregnant.

“I was later told the baby had died in the womb. She was not operated on as I had assumed. I thought that was why they had taken her to the theatre,” he added.

Hospital responds after Viona’s death

The family was devastated by the news and questioned how a tooth extraction could have led to the death of both mother and child.

Hospital management, however, maintained that the circumstances differed from the family’s account, offering a contrasting explanation.

“We had ongoing cases in theatre, so we had to wait for one operating room to be free before she could be taken in for intervention. The purpose of taking her to theatre was not to deliver the baby but to secure her airway through intubation,” one of the doctors explained.

Despite the hospital’s assurances that all emergency protocols were followed and that Viona received care even when she was unable to pay, the family remains unconvinced and is calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of her death.

Netizens react to Viona’s death

Social media users joined the family in mourning, flooding the comment section with messages of sympathy and concern.
