The man, identified as Kinyua, who was jailed at the age of 25, could not hide his joy as he was welcomed by his wife, children, and extended family with song and dance.
They lifted him up and marched to the prison gate, singing songs of praise and thanksgiving for his newfound freedom.
The 43-year-old held his son, who had been just two months old when he was imprisoned, visibly eager to make up for lost time.

A small ceremony was held at the prison to celebrate his successful rehabilitation, with wardens officially handing him over to his wife and family.
What did Kinyua say after serving 18 years?
Speaking during the event, Kinyua shared his experience in jail, joking about how he never thought he would be released.
“When I arrived, I saw people counting the days left to their release. I tried counting mine and ended up with a headache,” he said, eliciting laughter.
He recalled working on his reduced sentence, focusing on reform and developing his carpentry skills. Over time, he gradually held onto hope of someday leaving the prison gates and reuniting with his loved ones.
“My friends laughed at me when they saw me drawing plans for my home. I want to thank God for making this day possible, and I promise to live by the law from now on,” he shared.

Why was Kinyua jailed?
Kinyua was imprisoned after being found guilty of robbery with violence, which initially earned him the death penalty.
However, in 2016, former President Uhuru Kenyatta commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment, giving him hope.
He continued his sentence at Maranjau Prison in Murang’a County, and in 2019, his sentence was further reduced to 10 years.
The officer in charge at Maranjau Prison, Humprey Young, presided over a small celebration in Kinyua’s honour and encouraged other prisoners to learn from his story.
“When you do the math, Kinyua spent one year in remand and 17 years in prison, making a total of 18 years. He entered prison at just 25 and now lives at 43,” said Young, urging other inmates not to lose hope in life after crime.
