When Vincent Ongas left his home in Ugenya for China in 1988, he could not have imagined that decades later he would be leading operations for Kenya Airways in one of Asia’s busiest aviation markets.

What began as a young man’s pursuit of education abroad has grown into a life defined by resilience, cultural exchange and professional distinction.

How Ongas first moved to China

Leaked video exposes what's really happening

Ongas first travelled to China as a student at a time when very few Kenyans were making the journey east. The move presented both opportunity and challenge.

Chief among the obstacles was language. Mandarin was unfamiliar and complex, and daily life required determination and humility.

Rather than retreat into the comfort of English-speaking circles, the young Ongas immersed himself in his new environment. He listened, practised relentlessly and learned the language and subtleties of Chinese culture.

Those early years laid the foundation for what would later become his greatest professional asset, the ability to bridge two very different worlds.

How Ongas got into Kenya Airways

After completing his studies, Ongas established a tour business, helping travellers navigate China and discover its rich history and commerce.

It was during this period that Kenya Airways took notice. In the early 2000s, when the airline launched its China route, it required someone who could help passengers navigate cultural and linguistic differences.

Ongas was approached to assist with translation and passenger support, a role that would mark the beginning of a long association with the airline.

Thirteen years ago, he boarded a flight back to China, this time not as a student, but as the Airport Manager overseeing the airline’s operations in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou.

Role of Ongas at KQ’s China hub

The city, a major commercial hub, plays a crucial role in trade and travel between Africa and Asia. For Kenya Airways, maintaining smooth operations there is vital, and Ongas stands at the centre of that effort.

“Working in a country where the language is different hasn’t slowed me down,” he reflects. “Instead, it has pushed me to listen more, learn faster, and connect deeper.”

His ability to navigate sensitive situations, whether assisting passengers, negotiating with local authorities or coordinating logistics, stems from decades of lived experience in China.

He understands both Kenyan expectations and Chinese business etiquette, allowing him to build trust on both sides.

Ongas is a family man

Beyond the airport, Ongas’s life is deeply rooted in his adopted home. He is married to a Chinese woman, and together they are raising two children.

His family life, like his career, reflects a blend of identities: Kenyan heritage woven seamlessly with Chinese culture.

For Kenya Airways, Ongas represents more than operational leadership. He symbolises the power of adaptability and the value of investing in people who understand the markets they serve.

From a student navigating unfamiliar streets to a manager steering a key international station, Vincent Ongas’s journey is a reminder that sometimes the greatest distance travelled is not measured in miles, but in understanding.
