Governor Siminalayi Fubara has forwarded a fresh list of commissioner nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly following a recent peace deal that eased the protracted political crisis in the state.
The Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that the governor submitted nine names as the first batch of nominees.
Those nominated are Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, Otonye Amachree and Amairigha Hart.
According to the statement, the nominees have been directed to submit 40 copies of their curriculum vitae, photocopies of their credentials and evidence of tax compliance to the Office of the Clerk at the Assembly Quarters.
The nominations come weeks after Governor Fubara dissolved the State Executive Council on 12 February, shortly after President Bola Tinubu intervened in the lingering political dispute in the oil-rich state.
The crisis between Mr Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, had persisted since 2023 following a struggle for control of the state’s political structures.
As part of efforts to restore stability, the Rivers State House of Assembly on 19 February withdrew its third impeachment move against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, signaling a de-escalation of tensions.
