The Federal Road Safety Corps, RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, has conducted a joint road audit at the Agulu Lake black spot in Anaocha Local Government Area following four consecutive crashes that claimed 11 lives within one month.
The audit was led by the Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno.
NGGOSSIPS Online reports that tragedy struck in the area late on Friday, when no fewer than four women were killed, and nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash at the same location.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the driver conveying them lost control while descending towards a narrow bridge, resulting in the crash.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, said the joint audit team included representatives of the Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency, the Anambra State Ministry of Works, the member representing Anaocha in the State House of Assembly, and community leaders.
Onabe said the Sector Commander condemned reckless driving and structural defects in the road design, stressing the need for urgent intervention.
According to her, the joint audit was aimed at examining the road and identifying areas requiring infrastructure improvements.
“The Federal Road Safety Corps, RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, led by the Sector Commander, has conducted a joint road audit at the Agulu Lake black spot in Anaocha LGA, following four consecutive crashes that killed 11 persons within a month.
“The team identified areas requiring infrastructure development and recommended temporary barricades as interim measures. The Anambra Road Traffic Management Authority director directed the immediate installation of road furniture, and work began promptly.
“The member representing Anaocha in the State House of Assembly, Nkechi Ogbuefi, expressed sympathy with the families of the crash victims and promised to collaborate with the state government to redesign the road and adjoining lake area.
“The representative of the Commissioner for Works is also committed to implementing agreed measures, including barricading the road and installing rumble strips, to enhance safety at the location.
“Community leaders appreciated the Sector Commander’s efforts to improve safety in their communities and praised the FRSC’s prompt response during emergencies,” the statement read.
NGGOSSIPS Online reports that the crash occurred along the Nanka–Agulu axis of the Awka–Ekwulobia Road in Anaocha LGA.
While eyewitnesses could not confirm the exact number of casualties, the FRSC officially put the death toll from Friday’s incident at four.
