First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, on Sunday commissioned the National Assembly Christian Chapel, urging lawmakers to embrace humility, courage and compassion in leadership.
In a statement, her spokesperson Busola Kukoyi said the First Lady, speaking at the dedication ceremony in Abuja, described the chapel as a symbol of the National Assembly’s accountability to God in carrying out its legislative duties.
“While we legislate for the people, we ultimately remain accountable to God,” she said. “As we dedicate this chapel today, may it inspire humility in leadership, courage in decision-making and compassion in service.”
She added that she believes the National Assembly is ready to “pray Nigeria into greatness,” expressing hope that the country would flourish as leaders and citizens seek God in worship and prayer.
The event was attended by former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, lawmakers and other dignitaries.
In his remarks, Gowon urged legislators to ensure that their actions are guided by the nation’s best interests. He emphasised that the law of God is rooted in love for God and neighbour, calling on members of the National Assembly to uphold unity and national continuity. “Love must be used to ensure the unity and continuity of this nation,” he said.
Dogara, who initiated the chapel project during the 8th Assembly, described the facility as a place for repentance, national healing and unity. He said the chapel should serve as a centre for spiritual renewal and cohesion among lawmakers.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, said President Bola Tinubu continues to receive support based on the quality of his leadership and reform agenda. He urged Nigerians to look beyond religious differences and focus on competence and character.
