A father cannot hide his joy after his son made him proud, uplifting their family name and bringing honour and respect to their home.

Kasekende Fulugensio restored his father’s dignity and filled him with pride after graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University.

His father, who earns a living as a boda boda rider, was visibly overjoyed by the achievement.

“Kasekende was among hundreds of graduands conferred degrees during the week-long #Mak76thGrad celebrations at the university’s main campus in Kampala. His achievement has drawn admiration from fellow students and members of the public, who describe his journey as a testament to hard work and perseverance despite financial challenges.

Growing up in a modest household supported by his father’s daily earnings from operating a motorcycle taxi, Kasekende faced numerous obstacles on his path to becoming a medical doctor. Friends say he remained focused on his studies throughout primary and secondary school, consistently performing well and earning admission to one of Uganda’s most prestigious institutions,” Amolatar Post reported.

Following his graduation, Kasekende posed for heartwarming father-son photos with his dad, the man who had sacrificed so much to educate him.

“The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme at Makerere University is widely regarded as rigorous and highly competitive, requiring years of intensive coursework and clinical training. Graduating from the programme marks a significant milestone for any student, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, university officials congratulated the Class of 2026 for their resilience and commitment to academic excellence. They encouraged graduates, particularly those entering the medical profession, to serve their communities with integrity and compassion,” the post added.

Kasekende’s father had reportedly struggled with boda boda loan repayments, at one point facing threats of repossession after defaulting.

Netizens congratulate Kasekende Fulugensio

The viral photos sparked an outpouring of support online, with many praising both father and son.

Twebs Judith:

“We are many living testimonies. From a deep village and a poor USE school, I felt like an outsider in high school. But in 2016, I joined Makerere as a government-sponsored student. To this day, I remember that miracle and cry.”

Lök Pë:

“Those questioning the phrase Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, it’s correct. When you complete that course, you’ve essentially done three areas: medicine, surgery, and public health.”

Opio Martin:

“Boda boda business is respectable. Imagine using a bike worth millions to support your family. I’m also proud that my motorcycle helps provide for my family and pays our bills. One day I will drive a car. Those who laugh at boda boda riders should be careful, instead, pray for us.”

David Ariko:

“That’s wonderful. If this were a woman, the whole world would celebrate even more. But since he’s a man, only God will reward him. Much love to all fathers who struggle and are less appreciated.”
