Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a strong political platform and should not be treated as a charity organisation.
Wike spoke on Monday night at the party’s 105th national executive committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
He warned members against complacency and urged them to rebuild the party from the grassroots, beginning at the ward and polling unit levels.
“Forget the idea that PDP is a charity organisation. PDP remains a formidable political force despite its current challenges,” he said.
“PDP is too strong, very strong. We must capitalise on what we have and move forward.”
Wike also declared a strong interest in developments within the Oyo chapter of the party as part of efforts to sustain its strength.
He commended the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the NWC for their peace initiatives but urged members to remain alert.
According to him, there were continued efforts to weaken the PDP, insisting that opponents would not stop until the party was destroyed.
“They will not give up until they believe you are destroyed, but I will not be destroyed; you will not be destroyed. Let us move forward,” he said.
The minister expressed confidence that those he described as “vampires” would fail in any attempt to seize control of the party across the states and the FCT.
He urged the PDP to depend on its internal expertise, noting that experienced legal and organising officers were already in place.
“We have a competent legal adviser. We have a competent national organising secretary. Experience matters. When we combine our collective experience, the results will speak for themselves,” Wike said.
Wike said the party was awaiting clear guidance from the caretaker committee, especially on conducting the delayed congresses ahead of a credible national convention.
He described the congresses as “critical steps” towards restoring order and rebuilding confidence within the party.
