A sombre mood hangs over Shipala village in Hamisi Sub-County, Vihiga County, after three Form Three students from St Francis Kaptik Secondary School lost their lives in a tragic road accident as they headed to class.

The three girls, who were cousins, had set off together on a motorcycle ride to school, a routine journey that ended in unimaginable loss.
Diana Muhonja, an aunt to the deceased, told NgGossips that the motorcycle was struck from behind by a speeding lorry near the school gate.
The rider and one of the students died at the scene. The two other girls were rushed to Kapsabet County Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries despite efforts by medical staff to save them.

Their bodies now lie at Kaimosi Friends Hospital mortuary as family members, friends and schoolmates struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.
“One of them spent last Christmas with my kids here in Nairobi. Her clothes are even still here,” the distraught aunt mourned.
At Shipala village, grief is heavy and raw. Diana described the girls as close-knit cousins who shared not only blood ties but dreams for the future. Their deaths have left a void that words can scarcely capture.
In the hours following the crash, anger spilled onto the streets as residents barricaded the busy Kaimosi–Chavakali road.
They paralysed transport for several hours as they protested what they termed the poor state of the road, arguing that its narrowness and lack of proper maintenance have repeatedly contributed to fatal accidents.
“Yes, the driver could be wrong by speeding and also the rider by miscalculation, but the road there is too narrow. Many have lost their lives. It needs to be expanded,” Geoffrey Shivanga, a resident, quipped.
Locals are now calling on authorities to urgently expand and rehabilitate the stretch, warning that without intervention, more lives could be lost.
