  • Fathia Raji left home in 2020 with no bed, no luxury, just a dream, and years later, she is celebrating a first-class degree in Mathematics
  • Through grit, faith and five scholarships, she earned major achievements, among them attaining a CGPA of 3.90 out of 4.00
  • Apart from receiving the Dean’s Roll of Honour Award for three consecutive years, she was also given a Silver Honour Award from the International Youth Maths Competition

A young woman is over the moon after completing her university studies, made possible through five scholarships. Fathia Raji graduated with a first-class honours degree in mathematics, an academic feat she celebrated on LinkedIn.

The proud graduate recounted how she struggled to gain admission and the various achievements she got during her undergraduate days.

When did Fathia join university?

Fathia disclosed that she left home immediately after secondary school in 2020 to seek admission at the University of Ibadan.

“I started a completely new life with the little I was given from home and what I earned from tutoring,” she wrote on LinkedIn. “You can imagine the kind of room that was. No bed. No nice clothes. Just the vision to not go home until I had secured admission.”

She went ahead to list the major achievements thus far, among them attaining a CGPA of 3.90 out of 4.00 at the end of her third year with 34 (A) and 1(B) in all mathematics courses.

Apart from receiving the Dean’s Roll of Honour Award from the Faculty of Science for 3 consecutive years, she was given a Silver Honour Award from the International Youth Maths Competition (IYMC).

Fathia’s commendable achievements

Furthermore, she served as Vice President, National Association of Mathematical Science Students, during the 2023/2024 session.

“Served as an Academic Team Member for the Mathematics Department for 3 consecutive years,” she continued.

Apart from the above, she also mentored over 30 students at the university and secured five undergraduate scholarships: MTN Scholarship, Egbe Omo Yoruba of Greater Miami Valley Scholarship, Jim Ovia Scholarship, Opekete Foundation Scholarship, and Afrotech Girls Scholarship.

Away from school, she interned at the National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research (NIRPR) at the University of Ibadan Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (UI LISA)

“Won 3 medals playing football for Epsilon Ladies Club (2 silver, 1 bronze). Volunteered, spoke at events, and most importantly, networked and connected with students across various departments,” she concluded.

German school offers job to fresh graduate

In another heartwarming story, a fresh university graduate turned a simple online celebration into a life-changing career opportunity after her graduation post on X (formerly Twitter) went viral.

It all started when Oluwaseyi Funmi made a celebratory tweet about earning a degree in German and drew massive online admiration.

Her post attracted 7.9 million views, over 22,000 likes, more than 2,000 retweets and thousands of supportive comments.

Shortly after her post went viral, she was offered a potential job as a German teacher by a language school inspired by her achievement.
