  • A young woman who dispensed the wrong medicine to a mother found herself at fault and on the receiving end of the parent’s anger
  • The mother confronted her, questioning why she had given her the wrong medicine for her child, who had been in constant pain until she was forced to return to the pharmacy
  • The pharmacist barely had an explanation as she asked the mother to follow her aside so they could speak privately after the confrontation caused a scene

An upset and disappointed mother has stormed into a local pharmacy to express her anger after being given the wrong medicine for her baby.

The mother was fortunate to find the attendant who had sold her the incorrect medicine on Monday, February 23, when she returned to seek clarification.

She had initially visited a doctor and received the correct prescription, as shown in a TikTok video, indicating that she had sought professional medical advice before purchasing the medicine for her ailing child.

However, despite having a written prescription, the pharmacy attendant dispensed the wrong medicine, leaving the mother distressed.

“Why did you sell me skin medicine, which I have been applying to my child’s eyes? Can you imagine? Just look. Since Monday, I have been applying it five times a day to my child’s eyes. See what you have done,” the worried mother said as she showed her child to the attendant.

The medical practitioner had little to say as she rechecked the prescription, which clearly indicated the correct medicine and instructions.

She appeared shocked and struggled to explain how the mistake had occurred after realising the harm caused.

“Do you know you work in healthcare? Why did you do this? If your mind was on skin medicine, why did you write this?” the mother confronted her.

The attendant responded, “I did not see this. I honestly did not see this at all.”

The mother said her child had been crying in pain, prompting her to return to the pharmacy to complain and seek further guidance.

She expressed disappointment, saying she had trusted the pharmacy but ended up in a worse situation than before.

“What should I do to you? Your apology does not help me. I can sue you,” the mother said, as the attendant requested that they speak privately.

Kenyans react to viral video

The video went viral, with social media users flocking to the comment section to express their anger over the error.

Devna Chepngetich:

“The case should be taken to court and the person held liable. That’s why studying medicine takes years; you’re dealing with people’s lives. It’s not a walk in the park.”

Shadrack Kiprop:

“You speak English well, but you failed to read the instructions properly. People are always advised to read instructions carefully before using any medicine.”

Ian Hippie:

“That was very unfortunate. To fellow citizens, make it a habit to Google the medicines you buy. I always check the side effects.”

Justine Wekesa:

“Always Google the name of the medicine you’ve been given for a better understanding. Don’t trust anyone these days, people are just doing business.”

PSK responds to viral video

In another development, the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) distanced itself from the attendant and clarified her professional status.

PSK called on the Pharmacy and Poisons Board to investigate the outlet following public outrage over possible violations.

The professional body also cautioned against labelling all pharmacy workers as pharmacists in light of the concerning incident.
