Thika: CCTV footage shows how relentless criminals followed motorist, stole car outside church

• A woman who had parked her car outside a church in Thika was stunned when she got out at 2pm, only to find that it was missing.

Thika, Kenya: A woman is calculating her losses after criminals followed her all the way to church and stole the car she had just parked outside.

In CCTV footage obtained by TV47, a car is seen parked outside the church, and later another silver Fielder approaches it and then turns in front of it.

At 10:30 am, the same Fielder passes the vehicle again but in the opposite direction. It is later parked at a spot and then moved next to its target. Eventually, it is parked in the opposite direction. By that time, it had changed its registration number, but the vehicle’s appearance remained the same, from the tinted windows to the distinctive rims.

At 11:42 am, a man is seen breaking into the vehicle for the first time and remains inside the car for seven minutes. At 12:08 pm, the CCTV captures another man, the driver of the other Fielder, breaking into the car again before driving away with it.

The Fielder follows, and that is how the car, which was a gift from a son to his loving mother, was stolen.

“My mum asked me if I had taken the car, and I told her that I was running my errands and that I have my own car,” said the distraught son.

How were the suspects arrested on Kenyatta Road?

When the matter was reported to the police, they said that they needed to see the CCTV footage so that they could arrest the culprits and take them to court.

From NTSA records, the Toyota Fielder is registered under the name of Kimani Wanjohi. Upon further investigations, it was established that a person with the same name had previously been arrested in 2024 on charges of motor vehicle theft.

It also emerged that this was not the first time one of the culprits had committed such a crime, as he was well known in police records for stealing cars belonging to others. In fact, he has another case at the Makadara Law Courts, where he is accused of stealing a Toyota Probox.

“The same two guys I had seen in the footage were on Kenyatta Road doing their errands,” he said.

It was reported that the suspect was arrested in the Kenyatta Road area, and when the owner of the car visited the estate, he found the vehicle that had been used to steal his car.

So far, 39 cars have been stolen since January.
