The Osun State Police Command on Thursday said it had rescued 15 young persons suspected to be victims of a human trafficking syndicate and arrested one suspect in connection with the crime.

In a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, and obtained in Osogbo, the police said the victims were rescued from a house in Osogbo where they had been camped by suspected traffickers who are currently on the run.

Ojelabi said intelligence gathering led operatives of the State Intelligence Department to the three-bedroom flat located at Adeleke Estate, Osogbo, where the victims were lodged under suspicious circumstances.

According to him, the traffickers allegedly brought the victims from Niger, Togo and the Benin Republic with promises of lucrative job opportunities and better living conditions in Nigeria.

The statement read in part, “The Osun State Police Command has successfully rescued fifteen young persons who were victims of a suspected human trafficking syndicate during a coordinated, intelligence-led operation carried out by operatives of the State Intelligence Department.

“Acting on credible information, officers of the command rescued the victims who had allegedly been deceived with false promises of employment and improved living opportunities outside their home countries.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were transported to Nigeria from Togo, Benin Republic and Niger and kept in a three-bedroom flat at Adeleke Estate, Osogbo, before the intervention of the police.”

The rescued individuals were identified as Moise Nanga (30), Myriam Yakouba (28), Rostand Joseph (29), Mouris Kassoko (26), Bicosso Nadia (22), Samoru Ilan Azote (20), Doris Samnat (23), Zogo Miichelle (25), Nebi Sera (21), Moeva Loure (23), Awa Asoka (25), Sonara Rene (26), Ella Cadore (24), Odil Mapa (25) and Madji Sanni (22).

The police spokesperson said the victims were receiving necessary care in protective custody, adding that the command was collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure their rehabilitation and reunification with their families.

On the arrest made during the operation, Ojelabi said some suspects linked to the crime had fled, but one agent who rented out the apartment to the alleged traffickers had been arrested and was assisting investigators.

“Some suspects connected to this criminal act have absconded, but the command is on their trail. The agent who provided the accommodation has been arrested and is assisting with ongoing investigations,” he said.

Reaffirming the command’s commitment to tackling human trafficking and other organised crimes, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Gotan, urged parents, guardians and landlords to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or recruitment schemes to security agencies.
