The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is transitioning its operations to electronic and electrical systems as part of a sweeping modernisation drive aimed at reducing vandalism, blocking revenue leakages, and strengthening operational efficiency.
Its Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, made this known while speaking on a monitored television programme.
Opeifa said the corporation is repositioning itself after a turbulent period, noting that while the rail system has stabilised, deliberate reinforcement and technological upgrades are now critical to long-term sustainability.
According to him, the NRC will transition toward advanced electronic systems that will not only secure railway assets but also improve monitoring, ticketing, and operational coordination across major routes.
āWe will be going electronic and electrical to reduce vandalism, eliminate leakages, complete modernisation and strengthen linkages,ā he stated.
He noted that railway vandalism has remained a major setback for the corporation, particularly following the 2022 attack on the AbujaāKaduna train service, which significantly disrupted operations and destroyed critical assets.
Opeifa emphasised that integrating modern surveillance systems and digital monitoring tools would help safeguard infrastructure and rolling stock.
Beyond security, the NRC boss stressed that digital transformation would address revenue leakages through automated ticketing, improved passenger data systems, and transparent operational processes.
Rail transportation, he noted, is highly capital intensive, and sustainable funding requires plugging financial gaps while optimising available resources.
Opeifa also disclosed that new train units are being introduced and that passenger capacity on the AbujaāKaduna route will be increased soon.
Drawing from his previous experience managing transportation systems in Lagos and Abuja, Opeifa expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms would restore the NRC to its former glory.
āThere is no country in the world that developed without a strong railway system,ā he said, underscoring the strategic importance of rail to Nigeriaās economic growth.
