The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has expressed sorrow over the death of more than 35 miners at Kanpani Zurak in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, urging authorities to enforce stricter safety regulations across mining sites nationwide.

In a statement issued following the incident, the Director-General of the agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, described the tragedy as unacceptable and called for improved protective measures to safeguard lives and prevent similar occurrences.

Issa-Onilu stressed that compliance with established safety standards must be prioritised, noting that the protection of human lives and critical national infrastructure should not be compromised.

“The dangers associated with unauthorised mining operations and substandard safety measures far outweigh any perceived benefits,” he said.

“Such reckless practices often result in devastating consequences, including explosions and infernos that claim innocent lives. We mourn the loss of our compatriots in the mining community and extend our deepest condolences to the grieving families.”

The NOA boss urged Nigerians to collectively reject unsafe practices that have repeatedly led to mass casualties and national trauma, describing the tragedy as avoidable.

He also called on relevant authorities and stakeholders in the mining sector to intensify enforcement of safety regulations, strengthen routine inspections and monitoring of mining sites, and ensure strict compliance with established standards to prevent future disasters.
