  • Nelson Kamau Maina, who passed both his primary and secondary exams with flying colours, founded Modish Fashion Thrift after struggling to find a job for over four years
  • His business expanded to four branches, showcasing resilience and adaptability in challenging times and not just folding his hands in despair
  • Kamau encouraged graduates to explore alternative paths instead of relying solely on traditional job applications as other graduates shared their experiences and also urged him to never give up

Juja, Kiambu: Young Nelson Kamau had very big dreams when he was graduating with a degree in Actuarial Science from the Technical University of Kenya, but so far they have not materialised, and he is redirecting them to the business world.

Speaking to NgGossips, Kamau, who is also known as Modish, said he was born in 1993 and raised in Karatina, Nyeri County.

“I was born in a n a family of seven; two parents and five children,” he said proudly.

Modish shared that he went to school at Jufred Primary School and scored 426 marks in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and later joined Mangu High School, where he performed very well.

“I scored an A- (A minus) with 77 points and later joined TUK (Technical University of Kenya), where I pursued Architectural Science and graduated with first class honours in 2016,” he explained.

“Since then, I have been searching for jobs for more than four years but in vain. So later I gave up on looking for jobs and decided to start a small hustle whereby I used to sell thrift heels and platforms…it’s been five years now since I started the business, and by God’s grace it has expanded to four more modish fashion thrift branches, ” he added.

What was Modish’s advice to other graduates?

Modish said that he is an example of learned people who lacked jobs but still managed to sustain themselves through business.

“I thereby call upon all graduates who unfortunately lack jobs to try something else productive instead of putting all hopes in papers because,” said the proud owner and founder of Modish Fashion Thrift.

Some graduates who saw his post urged him on and also told him to never give up; they also shared some of the impressive courses that they undertook, but now are hustling in different fields.

What were Modish’s low and high moments?

One of the best moments of the young entrepreneur was when big companies in Juja, King Queen Hotel and Honey Bee Hotel always offered a helping hand to him.

“One of the ways they offered help was by offering space where I would sell my products, and also offering some materials that I would use for work,”he said.

“Another of the best moments is always the way our clients always make referrals to other clients, especially when it is the graduation period,” he revealed.

On the other hand, one of his worst moments was when the Gikomba market was burnt down to ashes, leaving millions of business owners, who deal with thrift shoes, closing down their businesses due to a lack of stock.

“Another worst moment was when county government officials (kanjo) used to harase hawkers

“With the experience I have in business, I believe that business needs ample time to grow and be understood…therefore I would rather remain in business and strategise it better rather than getting employed,” he said.

Man who scored A in KCSE studies nursing,

In a previous story, Kenyandreadman shared his journey from being a high school success, taking on a nursing career due to limited university options in 2012, whichh prevented him from becoming a doctor.

Despite the challenges he went through while starting out, he later found job opportunities as well as personal success in nursing after KCSE, and now gets a salary of KSh 735,000.

Nursing provided him with financial stability as well as unexpected life experiences, challenging stereotypes about the profession held for a long time in Kenya.
