Through it all, they chose to stay committed, supporting one another in every season of life.
Kathleen, 85, from the United Kingdom, recounted how she found herself in Africa, specifically Nigeria, where she met the love of her life.

“We met while working in Goza. I was a nurse with Sudan United Mission at the hospital there, and my husband was serving as an evangelist at the time. We were later blessed with three children.
When God called me to become a Christian and I asked Him what He wanted me to do, He said missionary. I was shocked because I was very shy. He told me that if I agreed, He would change me,” she said.
Kathleen opens up about working in Nigeria
Kathleen travelled to Nigeria, one of the hottest places she had ever been, but the climate did not bother her, a sign, she believed, that she was truly called to missionary work.
The British nurse worked in Nigeria for six years, and by the end of her stay in Africa, she had already met Gula.
“My husband’s background is completely different from mine, and some people opposed our relationship, not because of race, but because of our educational differences. He had never been to school, but that did not bother me. I returned to the UK briefly and later came back, and we got married. Many people thought it would never work because of our differences,” she said.

Kathleen praises husband David Gula
Gula shared that he had been rejected by several women before marrying Kathleen, who is a year younger than him, because he chose to become a Christian.
He even paid bride price for one woman, but her family later refused to allow the marriage because of his new faith.
“We love the Lord. We pray together, work together and share everything. We believe this is what God wanted for us. I appreciate my husband because he cares for me deeply. Thirty years ago, I took malaria medication that affected my balance. He held my hand while I walked up and down the steps and never complained. That is pure love. We help each other all the time. He has always been there for me,” Kathleen said.
