Residents around Lake Naivasha in Nakuru county have been thrown into mourning following a tragic incident.

Three fishermen died after their boats capsized due to strong winds they could not overcome, leaving the locals in fear and pain.
Nakuru mum recounts distressing call
One fisherman who had a life jacket survived the violent storm, while his colleagues perished before he was rescued and rushed to hospital.
A mother was inconsolable after losing her young son, who was among the fishermen who perished in the tragic incident on Friday, February 20.

“I left work at around 4pm and found a missed call. When I returned the call, I was told that my son Brandon had fallen into the water and was no more. I asked how it happened. I was told they were in a boat when strong winds blew and capsized it,” Evalyne Naliaka said.
The heartbroken mother also revealed that her son had sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2025.
Two bodies remains missing in Lake Naivasha
Brandon was just a few days away from celebrating his 18th birthday, as his devastated mother shared while visiting the lake after it had calmed.
One body was retrieved from the lake, while two others were still being searched for by the rescue team as residents struggled to accept the tragedy.
“We have never seen such strong waves. They were extremely powerful. Other boats on the shore were destroyed because of the huge waves. They collided with each other until they were completely damaged and can no longer be used,” said Caren Atieno, a fish trader at Kamere Beach.
Raphael Juma, the chairperson at Kamere Beach, appealed to the county government to supply more life jackets to save lives.

He argued that if the other fishermen had life jackets, they might have been found alive when the lake became calmer, just like their colleague.
“The Nakuru county government has supplied more than 600 life jackets to boat owners on the lake. Every boat owner was issued with a life jacket. It is not true that the county government has not played its part,” said Henry Cheruiyot, the sub-county fisheries officer.
The heartbreaking incident came just a month after four other fishermen drowned in the lake following a hippo attack.
Residents stood in tears along the lakeshore, comforting one another as they awaited further updates from the rescue team.

Two young men drown in Lake Naivasha
In a similar incident, two families were left devastated after losing their sons who had gone fishing at night.
The grieving mothers said their boys had gone out to earn a living but tragically perished, leaving them in deep pain.
Both parents rushed to the scene hoping to retrieve the bodies of their sons, but were dealt a heavy blow as the bodies had not yet been recovered.
