Beatrice Wanjiru finally returned home after nearly three decades, as neighbours and friends celebrated her remarkable return.
She had been handed a death sentence in 1999 following a murder case involving a close family member, leaving her feeling hopeless.

However, her sentence was later reduced after a court ruling, giving her another chance at life.
“I had been sentenced to death. I cried to God, and He heard my cry. He helped me get out of that place. I was later handed a life sentence. When I heard that, I lost hope. Suddenly, God came through again for me. I was taken back to court, and my sentence was reduced,” she shared ecstatically.

Wanjiru said the lack of witnesses in her favour during the trial significantly affected the outcome of her case.
She described herself as having been the “government’s guest” for 27 years until her release from Meru Women’s Prison on Friday, February 20, for a crime she maintains she did not commit.

“My soul is full of forgiveness. I have forgiven everyone, and I hold no grudge against anyone. God has taught me many things. I have studied several courses and earned over 30 certificates,” she said.
Her return was marked not only by songs and dances but also by a celebratory feast as villagers shared in the joy of welcoming her home.
Her family was overwhelmed with emotion as they reunited with her after more than two and a half decades.
“As a family, we have suffered a lot, but from today onwards, our lives will continue like those of others who have been raised by both parents,” one relative said.

Another family member expressed his joy, noting that he had never seen her since he was born, making the reunion a life-changing moment.
“When we heard that she was coming home, we were very happy. We appreciate the government for returning her to us. They handled everything respectfully,” he said.
Wanjiru described her release as a new beginning and said she intends to use this fresh chapter to rebuild her life and reconnect with her four children, whom she left when they were young.
“I am grateful to everyone who visited me in prison and even those who never got the chance. I only ask for a place to stay because I currently have no home,” she said.

Kinyua spent 18 years at Maranjau GK Prison following a conviction, which distanced him from his family and the outside world.
After completing his sentence, he was warmly received by his wife and other family members as they celebrated his return home.
