Over the past few weeks, it has emerged that men from Kenya were secretly recruited and taken to fight for Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war that has been raging for years. The clandestine way in which some of the recruitment is being done makes it quite difficult to ensure that Kenyans who are fighting there are safe.

It has also been difficult for families to trace any compensation due to them after their relatives die in the war, although some seem to have contracts showing they are entitled to some form of compensation.
Then there are those who went to the country but seem to have vanished from the face of the earth, and their families are frantically looking for them.

“We are appealing to the government to help us so that we can leave this place; we are being treated in Ukraine, as we have not been taken to the Russian side yet. We are just being treated here.

These Kenyans were hit by Ukrainian drones while serving in the Russian army. They are recovering in Alchevs’k in the Luhansk region and are desperate to escape.
