Bangkok, Thailand: If someone had told Nickson Tanui that he would one day be a thriving teacher in Thailand, he would not have believed it, but now the Criminology and Security graduate says he is settled as a teacher.

Speaking to NgGossips, Tanui said that before he became a teacher, he struggled a lot as the journey was not easy, the same as his expectations.

“Now at least I am at least catching up; I have been awarded the English teacher of the year, and I would like my story to encourage young people,” he said.
When did everything change for Tanui?
According to Tanui, 2003 marked a profound turning point for him as the loss of his father cast a long shadow of sadness over their lives.
“My mother, displaying incredible strength, became the sole breadwinner, the only pillar left standing for our family in the face of sudden hardship,” he said.
“In the years that followed, the family we should have been able to rely on turned rogue. They took everything, leaving us with nothing—not even enough for school fees. It was a bitter betrayal. Life became incredibly difficult, and for a long time, I was tarmacking, walking a hard and dusty road just to survive,” he added.
But Tanui said that things turned around and God did favoured their family; against all odds and with nothing to his name, he managed to complete my school.

What was Tanui’s first job?
“I pushed forward, eventually joining university, where I dedicated myself to Criminology and Security Studies. This achievement was a beacon of hope in a dark time,” he said.

“After graduating, I secured a job as a security chief officer in the government. It was a position of responsibility, but it was not paying well enough to build a future. Faced with a difficult choice, I made the decision to leave the security of that job and “fly” abroad with my wife in search of better opportunities,” he added.
The journey abroad was extensive, and Tanui travelled through more than six countries, seeking a place to build a life. However, while they were abroad, his wife began to misbehave, and that meant he had to continue the journey alone.
“It was a painful realisation, and that is where we hung on the boots -we separated, and she went on her own way, leaving me to continue the journey alone,” he said.

How did Tanui finally settle?
After years of struggle, betrayal, and endless travel, Tanui finally found a place to rest. The long period of “tarmacking” was over.
“I have settled down, carrying with me the resilience built over a lifetime of challenges, finally able to look out at a horizon that promises peace,” he said.
Former Intern in Germany thrives as a farmer
In a different story, Jesse Wafula from Bungoma county, moved to Germany in 2020 while he was just as an intern and now he is a farmer there.
