Nairobi, Kenya: The last time that Kenyans saw Rufus Keratai, he was screaming with his kids and family after his lorries were auctioned, leaving them destitute, but what they did not know was that his friend had a hand in it.

According to Keratai, they have been friends since 2019, and they used to do the same kinds of businesses; in fact, he said that the other man used to ape what he used to do.

“I have been living with him since 2019, and the judgement came in 2025,” he said.

Keratai shared four kids between three and 13 years old; they all need to eat, go to school, and have clothes to wear, but they cannot do any of that because he has been jobless now for the last six months.

According to Keratai, he had been transporting building materials and was doing so well with his two lorries until an accident changed their lives forever.

How did Keratai start his business?

It emerged that Keratai used to wash cars, and finally he raised enough money to buy a boda boda, which I did for some time, and finally I bought a taxi and eventually bought a water bowser.

“I went to the bank and showed them my bank statement, and they gave me loans, and I bought tippers in 2019 and another in 2020, and I have been working with them until they were seized by auctioneers,” he said.

In 2018, there were floods, and an old man started walking in the floods, and he fell into the water and died; some passersby pulled him from the water, and my driver stopped to see what had happened. Some people asked what was going on, and he replied that he didn’t know but only suspected he had been hit, and that was later used against him,” he added.

The driver was later acquitted by the court, but the departed man, Kamau Kamwangi’s family, went and filed another civil court case, which placed the driver and Keratai as the defendants.

“It is a family I know, and I was a member of their dad’s committee; I was in the committee that planned his burial, and I did not know that they had placed a case in court,” said Karatai.

“I was never served to appear for the case, and my friend from that family kept asking me if I was going and if I had finished paying off the loans for the lorries. In June 2025, I was served by the decree to pay KSh 2.5 million over the death of the old man,” shared Keratai.

“I looked for a lawyer, and we tried setting aside the case, as I was never given room to defend myself, and the moment I filed the application, they held the two lorries; one was KSh 4.6 million and the other KSh 3 million. That is someone who wanted to cripple me. I was given two weeks to raise KSh 2.5 million,” he said.

The bank gave Keratai KSh 2 million after his family offered to help him with their title deed as security. The family went to advocate for Wegeshe, and we agreed that he would be paid that money KSh 765,000 and the family would get KSh 1 million. KSh 245,000 was to be given to the auctioneer.

The KSh 700,000 remaining for the family was supposed to be paid in KSh 50,000. The auctioneer said his fee was KSh 560,000 and told him that my fees were KSh 590,000.

The auctioneer started playing cat and mouse games, then he said that they had sold the lorries and he would talk to the people, and in the end, they refused to return the vehicles.

“The lawyer refused to return the money, and I decided that God is my only help, as I do not have any source of income. My landlord agreed to let me not pay for the house, and I will catch up. The teacher also agreed to be patient with me, but she got impatient as all four of them had not paid,” he said.

“I went to ask how much he sold the lorry for so he can give me the balance to sort out the cash problems, but he refused and sent me out, and I said that God will help me,” he added.

How is life for Keratai’s family?

So far, Keratai’s family has gone through so much; his children do not go to school, but thankfully, they have never gone hungry.

“My house is being paid for by a friend, and others also buy food for us. I told God that these lorries can go,” he said.

The situation that Keratia finds himself in takes him back to when the friend who allegedly betrayed him was suffering because of a failed business in the Congo.

“Business went down, and he went to Congo, but this did not work out because there was war and a lot of rain. He returned, and I used to feed him with his family. I would take him to work with me and drop him later in the evening with something small to feed his children,” he said.

Karatai’s vehicles were sold for just KSh 1.7 million, and his friend is the one who told the auctioneers where the lorries were, gave the numbers of the drivers, and even took the auctioneers to the lorry; he physically took them to where the lorries are so that they could be taken.

“My had been sacrificing so that the lorries wouldn’t be taken, but sadly now they are at home. My family is almost losing the land. I need to pay KSh 700,000. I need help from Kenyans, and I am also looking for a job,” he said.
