  • Bradley Obeka lost KSh 400,000 to betting, and apart from that, he also made his girlfriend lose a similar amount, which strained his relationship and plans
  • Despite his struggles, Bradley’s ex-girlfriend continues to support him with job opportunities, rent and everything he needed, and that is why he feels bad after letting her down
  • The young man is now getting back to his feet slowly, but still regrets losing the love of his life

Juja, Kiambu: A day before September 13, Bradley Obeka had KSh 50,000 and even called elders from his home to go and pay dowry, but by the end of that day, he had nothing and no wife.

The young man from Juja said that he mainly grew up with his aunt in Kawangware and would alternate between city life and village life, where his mum lived in Western Kenya.

Speaking to Itugi TV, Bradley said that once he was out of school, he lived in a church compound for some time, but intense power struggles saw them leave the church, and they started hustling to survive from 2018 to 2019.

“I used to sell mutura thanks to a friend who owned a butchery; I also used to repair phones and sell coffee before people from neighbouring Burundi took over,” he said with a chuckle.

“In 2021, my girlfriend introduced me to a friend in Ruai, and she got me a job at Kenafric as a salesman, and I worked there until 2022. At that time, I knew of the paltform but it never entered my mind. I was introduced to betting by a neighbour, and he told me he bet KSh 100 and earned KSh 60,000, and I didn’t mind. Another time he told me that he got KSh 25,000, and at that time I was earning KSh 26,000,” said Bradley.

That was the turning point for Bradley, and he wondered if he should give it a try.

“I bet KSh 100 and ate KSh 700. Next time it was KSh 500, but it was all eaten. I bet KSh 800 and got KSh 24,000, and that was the beginning of my downfall. My first reaction when I got the money was to take my girlfriend out, and she didn’t know where the money was coming from,” explained the Vihiga Boys High School alumnus.

Bradley shed some light on people who bet and said that when they win, they are loud about it, but they are always quiet when they lose, and that is how the young man’s neighbour was.

“I played and got to KSh 8,000, and something told me to withdraw it, but I didn’t; I played until KSh 15,000 was finished. The worst thing about betting is that it doesn’t want to see you with any cash. I even put in KSh 20 once,” he said.

“It became addictive, and I even started taking sales money, and it would all be eaten; the money would be deducted from my salary. I never got my salary for three consecutive months. I lost my job because of betting, and my girlfriend took money from her chama to buy me a motorbike so that I could run errands with it, but sadly, I used to take money paid by clients and use it for betting,” he added.

Was Bradley stealing from his girlfriend?

When Bradley’s girlfriend asked about the money, he claimed that he did not understand where it was going. Although he was working, his girlfriend also used to pay his rent.

“I then started stealing money from her phone because I knew her bank account and M-Pesa PINs. I bet just after I took the money and won KSh 8,000, and it got to a point that I initiated her into betting. She would bet a lot of money and sometimes even use KSh 5,000, KSh 15,000, or KSh 20,000. Mind you, she was an orphan taking care of her sisters, and she even started taking business money, and it would be eaten,” said Bradley.

According to Bradley, his lover had KSh 400,000 in savings and lost it all to betting. In 2024, she started living in a bedsitter and could not pay her bills, so the young lady eventually had to move in with him before she got back on her feet.

“Sometimes customers would send her money, and she would use it for betting, but things were so bad that my mother used to support us with money from her chama. Our debts started piling up, and at some point, I let down a friend of mine who needed a bigger TV, but I ate her money and started lying to her,” said Bradley.

According to Bradley, one of the downsides of betting is that you become a big liar and make a lot of enemies; he said that he also stole from former church members who trusted him as a phone expert.

“I also lost my KSh 20,000 phone for only KSh 10,000. I had a supportive girlfriend; she tried what she could do for us, but it never worked. I failed her; she, on the other hand, tried to quit but went back after a week. Eventually, she quit the vice completely,” he said.

“In August 2024, I quit, and during that time, we had gone from the introductions and started planning for the wedding, but I could not do anything as I didn’t have any cash,” he added.

Bradley decided to go back to betting since they had lost a lot of money, hoping to recover it. He took money from his girlfriend’s phone, and when she checked the balance, it was zero.

“She screamed at the top of her lungs, chased me away, and then blocked me everywhere. I went back to her, and by that time they had eaten KSh 400,000 in total. My girlfriend had a lot of hopes in me and said that we needed to revisit the dowry issue because age was catching up with her and she needed to settle down.

“We hustled and got KSh 50,000; she had handled everything else, including the photoshoot and clothes for the ceremony. The ceremony was scheduled for September 13, 2025, and we prepared both sides. On that Friday, she gave me KSh 50,000 and told me that if I messed up, it would be over between us,” he said.

While Bradley was in the matatu, he started betting with KSh 1,000, and eventually, KSh 35,000 was spent; he described looking at the balance as a nerve-wracking experience. It was at that point that it dawned on him that he had a beautiful and very supportive girlfriend, yet he was betting recklessly.

How did Bradley lose dowry money?

He played again, and this time he won KSh 16,000 and recovered the amount. At the house, he said he wanted to recover the KSh 2,000 that had been used as fare, but this time, KSh 16,000 was gobbled up.

He took KSh 3,000 and gave it to his neighbour to try and win for him so he could recover the amount, and got KSh 5,000. He bet it again, and it all went down the drain.

“At some point, I had KSh 20,000; then I bet KSh 2,000, then KSh 18,000, but this time things went up for me, and I got KSh 38,000. I played again, and this time it was eaten, and only KSh 18,000 remained. I later played and won KSh 40,000, then KSh 60,000. From that cash, I withdrew KSh 55,000 from M-Pesa, and I started winning and eventually had KSh 125,000.

“I bet KSh 60,000 and lost all of it, but it was okay because I remained with the KSh 50,000. After I called the old men who were coming to tell them that I was ready, I bet KSh 10,000 in smaller amounts. I took KSh 5,000, and it was gobbled up, and I remained with KSh 35,000,” he said.

“I texted that woman and told her that I only had KSh 35,000, and she cancelled the relationship and wedding in about five texts,” he added.

How is Bradley now?

Panicking, Bradley tried betting again to salvage his relationship, and this time he remained with KSh 20,000. I bet KSh 2,000 and got KSh 80,000. The next bet was KSh 4,000, and all the money was taken, and he ended up with only KSh 1,900, yet the elderly men had already eaten at the hotel. That is when he knew it was all over, and when his woman arrived, she told him it was over.

“She really cried, saying that she had sacrificed. We were required to carry sugar and unga. I just remained with it as the lady and wazee left me all alone,” he said.

“I went back to the house and broke the home bank with KSh 28,000 and stuffed it with papers; that’s when I knew two wrongs don’t make a right. It still hurts me to this day that we had a future together, and I also left the church,” he said.

Bradley is trying to pick up his life, and surprisingly, it is his girlfriend who got him a job; although they are not together, he still talks to her and wants to ask his people for forgiveness.
