The mother was eventually located in North Carolina, US, bringing an end to her family’s desperate 24-year search.
It marked a major development for the family, who had spent more than two decades wondering whether she was alive or dead.
“I kind of want to go outside and scream, ‘She is alive, she is alive,’” said Barbara Bird, one of Michelle’s cousins, after learning the news.

Michelle was a 38-year-old mother when she left her home in Eden and travelled to Martinsville, Virginia, for Christmas shopping.
Unfortunately, she never returned home, and her black car was never found, deepening the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
For years, her family did not know whether they were grieving or still waiting, as they had no leads regarding her sudden disappearance.
