The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finalised its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, even as amendments to the Electoral Act are still being considered by the National Assembly.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a consultative meeting with civil society organisations. He said the commission had concluded work on the election calendar to ensure early and orderly preparations for the polls.
Amupitan explained that INEC had already forwarded its recommendations and proposed amendments to the Electoral Act to lawmakers. He noted, however, that certain aspects of the timetable could be reviewed once the legislative process is completed and the amended law receives presidential assent.
According to him, the commission is obliged to proceed with preparations based on the existing legal framework until any new law comes into effect.
He stressed that delaying preparatory activities would be impractical, given the scale, logistics and nationwide coordination required to conduct general elections in Nigeria.
Amupitan assured stakeholders that INEC remains committed to transparency and continued engagement with relevant groups as preparations for the 2027 elections progress.
