Nigerian filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has sparked widespread reactions after announcing plans to divorce his wife in order to give himself the freedom to marry multiple women.
Afolayan made the disclosure while speaking at a watch party for his latest film, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens. In a video from the event that has since gone viral, the filmmaker revealed that he is already in court pursuing a divorce.
“I am in and out of court seeking a divorce. I don’t mind the toll. So I can marry many wives now,” he said.
The filmmaker explained that his decision is largely influenced by his upbringing in a polygamous family. According to him, his late father, who had ten wives, played a major role in shaping his life and career.
“Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan. I am the seventh child of my father because he had ten wives,” Afolayan stated.
He went on to encourage men to consider polygamy, arguing that his father’s lifestyle made his own existence possible.
“For the men, marry many women, or rather be involved with many women. You know why? If my father didn’t, he would not have born me, and that is the honest truth. But today, a few of us are lifting his legacy. Life is short, death is constant. Nobody has life forever. Everybody has a period. Use your period,” he said.
His remarks have since triggered heated debates online, with many social media users pointing out that his current position contradicts his earlier views on polygamy.
In a 2021 interview, Afolayan had openly spoken against polygamy, citing the challenges he witnessed growing up in a large household.
“I would not want to marry many wives because my father had 10 wives, and I knew what happened throughout that period. I knew that really distracted my father,” he said at the time.
He also noted that managing a large family of 25 children came with difficulties, including language and cultural differences that prevented the family from bonding closely.
Despite his previous stance, Afolayan’s recent comments suggest a major shift in perspective, as he now credits his father’s choices for his success and legacy.
