A member of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) appeared before the Masunga Magistrates Court on 23 February, charged with the murder of his wife in a case that has shocked the Matobo community.
Sergeant Tonny Mbiganyi, 50, is accused of killing his wife, Violet Mbiganyi, 49, at their home in Matobo village on Friday morning. Reports indicate that the couple’s 10-year-old twins were present at the house at the time of the incident, adding to the gravity and emotional weight of the case.
While the official charge sheet presented in court did not detail the circumstances of the killing, it has been reported that Mbiganyi allegedly stabbed his wife multiple times with a knife. At the time of the incident, he was stationed at the Rakhuna Military Garrison.
During his brief court appearance, Mbiganyi pleaded for immediate release on bail. Addressing the court, he claimed that “things are mixed up” and stated that he needed to be at home to assist with burial arrangements for his late wife. He further told the magistrate that he had an insurance policy through his employment that could help cover funeral costs.
“I have insurance at work that could be of help so I plead that I be granted bail to process it,” he said, adding that his relatives had informed him they were struggling financially to meet funeral expenses.
The court, however, denied his request for bail at this stage. The magistrate informed the accused that arrangements could be made for him to process the insurance claim while in custody. Mbiganyi was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again on 10 March.
The case has drawn significant attention in the region, particularly given the accused’s position within the military and the reported presence of young children during the alleged attack. Investigations are ongoing as authorities prepare to proceed with the matter. Please Share 🙏…
