Ibrahim Gambari, former chief of staff to late President Muhammadu Buhari, says he is certain Buhari remained the same person he worked with in 1984.
Gambari made the remark on Monday while responding to questions during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
He dismissed the long-standing rumour suggesting Buhari was replaced by a different individual popularly referred to as ‘Jubril of Sudan’.
“I’m sorry to disappoint. I had no doubt at all that the Buhari I knew in 1984 was the same until his death,” he said.
According to him, the claim that Buhari was a different person as “baseless and unreasonable.”
“That was really quite a silly thing to say he was a different person (Jubril of Sudan),” he added.
The former chief of staff said such narratives persist because some Nigerians are quick to assume the worst about leaders and government.
“But the fact is that you have people in this country who actually believe the worst about anything and any government,” Gambari said.
Gambari also explained that Buhari personally spoke with him when offering him the role of chief of staff.
He said “This man was talking to me when he offered me the job.”
“He was talking to me about the things we did in 1984 and 1985 to the details.
“He was talking about the kind of loyalty he got from me.
