Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has declared that his side are no longer underdogs in Europe, insisting “everyone knows” they can win the Champions League again.
Speaking after the knockout stage draw in Nyon on Friday, the Spaniard said expectations around the French champions have shifted significantly.
He said: “It’s different from last year where nobody thought we could win the Champions League. “Today, everyone knows we can win this competition.“For that, we have to improve our performances, we are aware of it.
But what we saw is positive, and we have to get used to the different circumstances.”
PSG face Chelsea in the round of 16, with a potential quarter-final against either Galatasaray or Liverpool awaiting.
Further down the bracket, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are possible semi-final opponents.Despite the difficult route, Enrique said his team’s mentality gives him confidence.
He said: “What makes me optimistic is seeing the team’s ability to handle the problems encountered this season.“During the season, we showed many times what our team was. We played many good games.
Statistically, it’s even better in certain aspects. I am happy in the way we prepare for matches, how we perform. The team shows its ability to overcome difficult situations and problems.”
PSG were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in the Club World Cup final in the United States, but Enrique dismissed suggestions of revenge ahead of the reunion.
He said: “I am very happy, as usual. It will be fascinating to play against one of the best teams and that we know well. “No feeling of revenge, these are different competitions.”
PSG now head into the knockout phase seeking to defend their European crown, with Enrique insisting the “fear factor” has shifted in their favour.
