The House of Representatives has rescheduled its resumption for plenary earlier scheduled for February 24, 2026 owing to the need for the 2026 Budget defence.
This development was conveyed to members and Nigerians through an Internal Memorandum issued on February 23, 2026.
The memo, titled: “Notice of Postponement of Plenary Session,” was issued by the Acting Clerk of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Sidi.
The House will now resume plenary on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at 11am.
The spokesman of the House, Akin Rotimi, said: “The adjustment is necessitated by the ongoing 2026 Budget Defence sessions by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), which remain substantially incomplete.
“The rescheduling is intended to allow Standing Committees sufficient time to conclude their engagements and ensure thorough legislative scrutiny of the budget proposals.”
Rotimi quoted the memorandum as stating: “In light of the ongoing 2026 Budget Defence by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, which remains substantially incomplete, the Leadership of both Houses hereby directs the postponement of plenary sittings to allow Committees conclude their budget defence accordingly.
“The Leadership regrets any inconvenience this adjustment may cause and urges Honourable Members to utilise the intervening period to further refine and strengthen discourse on the ongoing Budget Defence.”
Rotimi added: “The House of Representatives remains committed to a transparent, and comprehensive budget review process in the national interest and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all concerned.”
