The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from his position following instructions from President Bola Tinubu, Western Post has gathered.
Reports indicate that Egbetokun met with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where he was asked to step down. He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, currently the Assistant Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos.
Western Post had earlier reported exclusively that sources within the Presidency hinted at a shakeup in the Police Force following Disu’s arrival in Abuja.
Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on 19 June 2023, with the Police Council confirming his substantive appointment on 31 October 2023. At the time, he was 58 years old and due to retire in September 2024 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly allowed him to serve a full four-year term, meaning he was expected to remain in office until 31 October 2027 unless removed by the president.
Egbetokun’s resignation thus marks an early end to his tenure, coming less than three years into his expected term. His leadership had been regarded as part of the current administration’s efforts to strengthen policing and implement law enforcement reforms nationwide.
The incoming IGP, AIG Tunji Disu, has led the Force CID Annex in Lagos and is widely recognised for his expertise in intelligence and criminal investigations. He is set to assume the top position in the Nigeria Police Force.
The Presidency has not yet released an official statement detailing the reasons for Egbetokun’s removal or the exact timeline for Disu’s formal assumption of office. As the transition unfolds, stakeholders in the police and security sectors are expected to closely monitor how the change in leadership will affect ongoing reforms and operational strategies within the force.
