An old sermon by Apostle Joshua Selman, the founder of Eternity Network International and Koinonia, has gained renewed attention online amid discussions about tattoos in the church, following Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo’s recent tattoo reveal.
In the sermon, Selman addressed a question about tattoos, clarifying that markings made before becoming a born-again Christian carry no spiritual consequences.
However, he cautioned believers against getting tattoos after salvation, emphasizing that the concern is less about sin and more about exercising wisdom.
He explained that while certain actions may be permissible, they can still influence how others perceive a Christian’s faith and ministry.
To illustrate his point, Selman referenced the biblical parable of the ten bridesmaids, highlighting how even those deemed righteous can face setbacks due to unwise choices.
He suggested that visible changes, such as tattoos, could undermine credibility when preaching or praying for others, and encouraged Christians to avoid decisions that might create unnecessary doubt.
Selman also urged believers to prioritize inner transformation over outward appearances, warning against blindly following foreign trends that could weaken spiritual authority and respect for God’s principles.
According to him, true spiritual power stems from prayer, reflection, and a heart aligned with God, rather than from external alterations.
This sermon has resurfaced at a time when Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo of David Christian Centre (DCC) also Burna Boy’s uncle has drawn both criticism and support after revealing a tattoo of John 3:16 on his arm. While some see it as conflicting with biblical teachings on body markings, others view it as a creative method of sharing the gospel.
