Barely six days after six people were killed in a truck accident along the Old Toll Gate section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, another three persons have lost their lives in a fresh crash on the same route.
NGGOSSIPS Metro learnt on Sunday that the latest accident occurred in the early hours of the morning at the Ifo Railway Crossing section of the expressway.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Afolabi Odunsi, said the crash happened at about 4:20 a.m.
Odunsi said preliminary investigations showed that the accident involved a white Volvo commercial vehicle with registration number AYE 977 XA and was caused by excessive speeding.
He explained that seven people were involved in the crash, out of whom three died, one sustained severe injuries, while three others escaped unhurt.
“Out of the seven persons involved—five males and two females—three persons were confirmed dead, one female victim sustained severe multiple fractures, and three persons escaped without injury,” he said.
Odunsi added that the FRSC officers arrived at the scene at about 6:00 a.m., maintaining a 10-minute response time from when the incident was reported.
“The injured victim was taken by family members to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for specialised treatment, while the remains of the deceased were claimed by their families for burial arrangements,” he added.
He said emergency responders promptly cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow on the highway.
“The FRSC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, successfully cleared the obstruction to ensure free flow of traffic on the ABK/LAG route,” Odunsi said.
He added that the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, warned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, particularly at night and at critical points such as railway crossings.
“Motorists are strongly advised to adhere strictly to speed limits to prevent further loss of lives,” the statement added.
NGGOSSIPS Metro had reported last Wednesday that an oil-laden truck lost control along the Old Toll Gate section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, ramming into two vehicles and bystanders.
That accident resulted in the death of six people and left several others injured.
Following the incident, the Ogun State Government ordered the removal of roadside traders and shanties along the expressway to prevent a recurrence.
