Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said that the launch of Operation Savannah Shield will significantly deter criminal activities and restore peace following the recent deadly attack in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
Governor AbdulRazaq made the remarks on Thursday after briefing President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he also thanked the President for his swift response to the incident.
“Yes, I came to brief Mr. President about what happened in Kaiama Local Government of Kwara State and also to thank him for the prompt action he took by establishing Operation Savannah Shield,” the governor said.
According to him, the security operation will play a critical role in stabilising the region. “That will go a long way in deterring crime and bringing calm to Kwara State,” AbdulRazaq added.
The governor revealed that the operation has already commenced, noting that its leadership is now on the ground. “As I speak to you, the first commander for Operation Savannah Shield has reported in Kwara today, and he’s hitting the ground running,” he said.
AbdulRazaq further disclosed that President Tinubu has given clear directives to the military to act decisively. “Mr. President has directed the armed forces to move in, secure the area, and ensure peace and calm are restored,” he stated.
He added that the state government is relying on the military and other security agencies “to do what they do best” in safeguarding lives and property across the affected areas.
Communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, particularly Woro and Nuku villages, were hit by one of the deadliest violent attacks in Nigeria’s recent history on February 3–4, 2026. Reports indicate that armed extremists stormed the rural settlements, opening fire on residents, burning homes and shops, and abducting civilians.
