The United States has delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria to support ongoing operations against terrorist groups, reinforcing the long-standing security cooperation between the two countries.
In a statement issued by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, U.S. forces confirmed that the delivery was made this week as part of a long-term security partnership agreement with Nigeria.
The statement on Tuesday explained that the supplies are intended to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian military as it continues efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen national and regional security.
AFRICOM noted that the support reflects the United States’ commitment to working closely with Nigeria to counter shared security threats and promote stability across the region.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria reaffirmed that the partnership remains focused on strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities while advancing mutual goals of peace and security.
U.S. President Donald Trump, on Christmas Day last year, ordered American military forces to launch airstrikes against what he described as Islamic State militants in the northwest region of Sokoto State.
The operation was publicised by Trump as a “powerful and deadly strike” aimed at disrupting extremist fighters allegedly targeting Christians.
According to statements from AFRICOM and Trump’s posts on social media, the strikes were conducted in coordination with the Nigerian government and succeeded in killing “multiple ISIS terrorists.”
