The crash occurred last Monday when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and two associates reportedly collided with a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Lagos, while his companions, identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died at the scene.
Joshua’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, later confirmed that the former heavyweight champion was in a stable condition after receiving medical attention.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on Tuesday, Victor Osimhen described the incident as heartbreaking and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families.
“It’s devastating news,” the striker said. “Anthony Joshua is one of the big celebrities who has put Nigeria on the map for many years. My condolences go to the families of those who lost their lives.”
Bright Osayi-Samuel said the news came as a shock to the Super Eagles squad, adding that while the team was relieved Joshua survived, the loss of lives was tragic.
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi also expressed sadness over the incident, offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and strength for the families of the deceased.
The incident came just days after Joshua recorded a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, continuing his return to winning form in the ring.
