Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Armed Forces to address the country’s security challenges, saying the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains resolute in restoring peace and stability nationwide.
Shettima gave the assurance on Friday during a special Juma’at prayer held at the National Mosque, Abuja, to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
He paid tribute to fallen officers and soldiers who lost their lives in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity, acknowledging their sacrifices as well as the commitment of serving personnel and other security agencies protecting lives and property across the country.
The vice president noted that January 15 is annually set aside by the Federal Government to honour the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He also highlighted the recent renaming of the observance from “Armed Forces Remembrance Day” to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day”, explaining that the change reflects the dual purpose of celebrating serving personnel while remembering fallen heroes.
Speaking during the prayers, Shettima expressed optimism that Nigeria would witness lasting peace and prosperity under President Tinubu’s leadership.
He offered prayers for the repose of the souls of deceased military personnel and for strength and comfort for their families, while also seeking divine protection and empowerment for the armed forces in confronting the nation’s security challenges.
According to him, sustained support for the military remains central to the administration’s broader efforts to overcome insecurity and ensure national unity and development.
