Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday attended the swearing-in and inauguration of President Mamadi Doumbouya of Guinea, representing President Bola Tinubu.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s leadership role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and its commitment to democratic governance in the sub-region.
The ceremony, held at the General Lansana Conté Stadium in Conakry, followed President Doumbouya’s victory in the December 2025 general elections, which formally ended Guinea’s four-year military transition and marked the country’s return to constitutional democracy.
President Doumbouya was inaugurated for a single seven-year term in line with Guinea’s new constitution, which was approved through a national referendum in September 2025. The revised constitution extended the presidential tenure from five to seven years, renewable only once.
Several African leaders attended the ceremony, including heads of state and government from Ghana, Senegal, The Gambia, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, South Africa, Guinea-Bissau, and Mauritania. Also present was the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, alongside other senior regional and international officials.
In his inaugural address, President Doumbouya pledged to uphold Guinea’s constitution and democratic values, vowing to promote transparent governance, national unity, and peace. He assured citizens that his administration would prioritise the collective interests of all Guineans.
The inauguration ceremony attracted a large crowd of Guinean citizens and was marked by colourful displays and celebrations in the capital, Conakry.
