The All Progressives Congress (APC) faction in Rivers led by Emeka Beke has urged members of the State House Of Assembly to resist attempts to “destabilise” the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The Rivers State House Of Assembly on Thursday initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Ngozi Odu, his deputy.
Martins Amaewhule, speaker of the assembly, accused Fubara and Odu of actions he claimed constituted a threat to democracy while addressing lawmakers during plenary.
Darlington Nwauju, spokesperson of the Emeka Beke-led APC faction, said in a statement on Thursday that the party’s attention had been drawn to what it described as the “latest unfortunate developments” from the assembly.
The faction acknowledged the legislature as an independent arm of government constitutionally empowered to exercise checks and balances.
The APC faction said it “solemnly reject[s] the resort to an impeachment process against our governor and his deputy”.
The group said it would be unacceptable to remain silent while an “obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP” was allowed to resurface under its watch.
The faction said the impeachment move was linked to disputes surrounding the state budget and recalled that an appropriation bill was transmitted to the national assembly during emergency rule in May 2025.
It said the N1.485 trillion budget was approved by the senate on June 25, 2025, and by the house of representatives on July 22, 2025.
The party said the budget was structured to last for one year until August 2026 and added that the governor could choose not to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with its composition.
The faction said the constitution permits a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year by a state governor.
The APC urged members of the Rivers assembly, particularly its lawmakers, to resist “pressures from outside the assembly chambers to destabilise the government of Rivers state”.
It said the party would “do everything possible to ensure that the government of Rivers state, which is an APC government, is not destabilised through fratricidal disagreements”.
The faction called on lawmakers, especially APC members, to immediately halt the impeachment process, warning that it could “drag the image of our great party to the mud and stifle the continuous progress and development of Rivers state”.
“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy!!!” the statement added.
