The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has engaged senior officials of the United States Government and representatives of Bell Textron in discussions aimed at accelerating the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters.
The talks were held during a Programme Management Review meeting led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, from 5 to 6 January 2026 in San Diego, California.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the meeting focused on reviewing the status of the helicopter procurement and identifying measures to ensure the timely delivery of the platforms in line with agreed timelines and budget.
According to the statement, Aneke said the review was designed to strengthen programme oversight, accountability and effective execution as the service seeks to boost its operational capabilities.
The Air Force said the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters is a key component of Aneke’s command philosophy of building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive air power in support of national security objectives.
Aneke expressed appreciation to the United States Government and Bell Textron for their cooperation, professionalism and transparency in the implementation of the programme. He noted that the structured review reflects the NAF’s emphasis on discipline, results and prudent programme management.
“We remain fully committed to working closely with our partners to ensure the timely and successful delivery of these platforms,” the Air Chief was quoted as saying.
He added that the acquisition goes beyond a routine platform upgrade, describing it as a reflection of the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States. According to him, the programme underscores shared commitments to regional and global security, anchored on mutual trust and common values.
