The Chief Judge of Katsina State, Justice Musa Abubakar Danladi, has denied reports that bandits were released in exchange for peace in the state, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Speaking in Katsina during an interview with The Nation, Justice Danladi dismissed allegations that about 70 bandits were freed as part of any negotiation, insisting that no detained bandit had been released under any arrangement.
According to him, the Katsina State Government has maintained a consistent position against negotiating with bandits and has not deviated from that policy.
“The claim is not true. The government has repeatedly stated that it will not negotiate with bandits, and that position has not changed,” the Chief Judge said.
Justice Danladi explained that while some communities affected by banditry may have attempted to engage criminals independently out of desperation, such actions were carried out without the approval or involvement of the state government.
He disclosed that the bandits involved in those community-level engagements allegedly demanded the release of detained suspects as a condition for peace, prompting the affected communities to approach the government for intervention.
“The request was rejected outright by the government, which instead sought proper judicial guidance,” he added.
The Chief Judge disclosed that a victim-offender mediation committee has since been recommended and constituted, noting that any dialogue or intervention must be conducted within the confines of the law and with consideration for victims.
