The Federal Government has completed 60 per cent of its planned 90,000-kilometre fibre optic infrastructure rollout across Nigeria, according to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.
Tijani disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while speaking at an event to mark Global Privacy Day, organised by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
The Minister said the fibre deployment, announced by the government in August 2025, is a major component of efforts to expand broadband access, strengthen digital inclusion and support economic growth.
He noted that funding for the project has already been secured, adding that substantial progress has been made ahead of schedule.
“When I talk about connecting 90,000 kilometres of fibre, it is not just an aspiration. About 60 per cent of the work has already been done, and the money for the project has been secured,” Tijani said. “I can confidently say that the bulk of the work has been completed.”
According to the Minister, the digital infrastructure drive aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy anchored on shared prosperity.
He explained that increased economic output would strengthen the government’s ability to invest in critical sectors such as education, healthcare and transportation, while also improving public sector remuneration.
Tijani affirmed that the ministry is focused on ensuring that digital technology acts as a catalyst for inclusive growth, stressing that the benefits of digital expansion must reach all Nigerians.
