The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has nullified the national convention organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on November 15, 2025.
Uche Agomoh, presiding judge of the court, ruled on Friday that national officers elected at the convention must stop presenting themselves as the party’s recognised leadership.
Agomoh held that the convention was conducted in clear violation of existing court orders.
The judge ruled that the PDP could not disregard subsisting court directives and still seek judicial endorsement for actions taken in defiance of those orders.
He declared that the party must continue to operate through its caretaker committee until a lawful and properly convened national convention is held.
The judgment followed a suit filed by a faction of the party’s national working committee led by Kabiru Turaki, national chairman, seeking validation of the convention and recognition of elected officers.
The faction had convened the disputed national convention in Ibadan in November 2025.
At the convention, 20 members of the national working committee were elected, including Kabiru Turaki as national chairman.
Others elected were Hamza Akuyan Koshe as deputy national chairman — north, Daniel Ambrose Woye as deputy national chairman — south, and Arapaja Taofeek Gbola-Oladejo as national secretary.
The convention was held amid conflicting court rulings issued in the days leading up to the event.
On October 31, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the PDP to halt plans for the national convention.
Omotosho, presiding judge, ruled that evidence showed the party failed to conduct valid state congresses as required by the 1999 constitution, INEC guidelines and the PDP constitution.
However, on November 4, 2025, the Oyo State High Court directed the PDP and Umar Damagum, former national chairman, to proceed with the convention scheduled for November 15 in Ibadan.
The legal uncertainty deepened on November 11, 2025, when Peter Lifu, judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, again restrained the PDP from holding the convention.
The faction of the PDP aligned with Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory, stayed away from the national convention.
