President Bola Tinubu has urged the newly inaugurated Chairman and Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to be fair, diligent, committed, and patriotic in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
The President gave the charge on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, after administering the oath of office to the FCC Chairman, Mrs. Hulayat Omidiran, and 37 commissioners representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Describing the commission as “the conscience of the nation,” President Tinubu said its mandate is central to promoting fairness, unity, and stability in Nigeria.
“What you represent here today is the conscience of our nation. What you are being assigned to do is to promote and stabilise the conscience of this country — to be fair, diligent, committed, and patriotic,” the President said.
He stressed that Nigeria possesses the human capacity and natural endowments needed for development, urging the new officials to focus on what they can contribute to national growth rather than personal gain.
Borrowing from former United States President John F. Kennedy, Tinubu told the appointees to continually ask themselves what they can do to strengthen Nigeria’s development, unity, and stability.
Responding on behalf of the commission, Mrs. Omidiran assured the President that the FCC would diligently discharge its duties in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
She pledged that under her leadership, the commission would promote inclusivity and strengthen national unity through the equitable distribution of opportunities and resources.
