The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Friday confirmed the crash of one of its Alpha Jet aircraft in Niger State after the two pilots on board successfully ejected during a sudden in-flight emergency.
The incident occurred shortly after the jet took off from NAF Base Kainji for a routine post-inspection functional check flight. A statement released by NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the aircraft experienced a critical malfunction moments after becoming airborne.
According to the Air Force, the pilots maintained control of the aircraft long enough to steer it away from residential areas before initiating the ejection sequence. Both officers landed safely and are reported to be in stable condition. They are currently undergoing standard medical assessments following their escape from the aircraft.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, commended the pilots for their professionalism, quick thinking, and bravery, noting that their actions prevented what could have been a major tragedy on the ground. He ordered the immediate setup of a board of inquiry to determine the exact cause of the technical failure.
The Air Force emphasised that it remains committed to enforcing strict safety procedures and maintaining high operational standards, assuring Nigerians that flight safety continues to be a top priority.
