Speaking at the Christmas Village, Unity Park, Uyo, the governor said the state was making significant strides in tourism development, noting that the recent upgrade of the Victor Attah International Airport to international status would further boost the sector.
Governor Eno highlighted the state’s diverse tourism attractions, from the hills of Itu to the beaches of Ibeno and the relics of Ikot Abasi, adding that the 32-day Christmas Fiesta would showcase the cultural heritage of all local government areas, beginning with Abak. “We are waiting to receive everyone. Akwa Ibom State is ripe, and this is where it will be happening in the next 32 days, back to back,” he said.
He also emphasised the role of Ibom Air in expanding regional travel opportunities, enhancing accessibility and positioning Akwa Ibom to receive more visitors throughout the festive season.
Encouraging residents and tourists to explore the state’s offerings, the governor showcased Akwa Ibom’s renowned cuisine and assured visitors of a safe and well-organised celebration backed by robust security, medical and logistical preparations.
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia, described Governor Eno as the torch bearer of the state’s tourism renaissance, noting that the ARISE Agenda had repositioned Akwa Ibom as a preferred destination.
Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Udeme Otong, pledged legislative support for continued investment in tourism, while other officials, including the Head of Service, Mrs Elsie Anietie Peters, and Delivery Adviser on Tourism, Sir Charles Udoh, commended the impact of the Christmas Unplugged initiative.
The ceremony featured colourful performances, music and cultural displays, reflecting the vibrancy and diversity of Akwa Ibom’s cultural heritage as this year’s edition began on an enthusiastic note.
